The between-run checklist
Open QUESTS and claim the rewards for completed objectives.
Open available chests in CRATES, then inspect what you received.
Go to INVENTORY. Check the Weapons, Armor, Passives and Pets tabs rather than assuming everything is fitted automatically.
Equip the intended items. In the Mage tutorial, Apprentice Hood and Apprentice Tunic are the named armor pieces to equip.
Read an upgrade’s effect and cost before buying. Return to the loadout and confirm that your intended improvement is ready for the next run.
Gold and Essence serve different decisions

A concrete inventory example: Whetstone
The September 13 loadout shows Whetstone as a Common passive. Its Lv1 panel reads +10% Damage and has separate Equip and Upgrade Ready controls. That separates ownership, use and further improvement.
If you are checking your own passive, first confirm its equipped state, then compare the displayed level and effect. The single Lv1 observation does not establish every later level, maximum bonus or upgrade cost.
Let the last failure choose the next improvement
A specific comparison is visible in the September 13 GameWala footage: Horseshoe Magnet targets Pickup Range, while a Sword option lists Range, Damage and Attack Speed. Read the effect that solves your problem instead of treating every upgrade as more damage.
Community reports describe Essence buying pet eggs whose pets can give permanent stat buffs. The inspected material does not establish hatch odds or a best-value egg, so compare the live purchase and pet effect before spending.
